illustrated by Mr. Boddington, who is not a man but is the name of an art studio in NYC! endpapers show the rooms of Santa's workshop on the front (with an elevator going from floor to floor), and a Holiday Log on the back with a place to record favorite presents year by year. The name of the book is 'Twas The Night Before Christmas and was given to Sarah  Christmas 2023.

Drawings are simplistic and little cartoonish, sort of like Grandma Moses' illustrations. two mice, asleep in Mouse House #1, with parents and children in their own beds. Santa flies in over colorful cities reading a long list of locations - Paris, NYC, Tokyo, etc. He carries a bag of coal with him. Elves are riding on some of the reindeer. When the sleigh lands on the rooftop, reindeer sprawl over the dormers of roofs. Santa has a "nice list" of names, and drinks coffee made in a French Press. In the stocking - PopRocks, Slime, fancy coffee, a Rolex, and tickets to the NYC Ballet. By the end of the book, Santa's on his way to Rome.

The setting reminds me a little of my own house. It's a cape, with wide board floors, painted wall panels, a fireplace like mine, and lots of natural decorations (and 12 over 12 windows, which I have long wanted). The Santa is different-looking, like an old grandfather sort, and he comes down the chimney carrying a wand with a star. There's a toddler who awakens when the Father does (he's there on the cover), and he come downstairs and witnesses Santa working his magic.

Elves march across endpapers in fine Engelbreit style, and text on each page begins with a candy-cane illuminated letter. Story starts in the sleeping mouse's home, with a cupcake Christmas tree, a watch/wall clock showing 12:02, and a mouse hole that looks through to the home's living room, all ready for Santa. Fairies carry the sugarplums in the children's dreams. Behind Santa, as he sits in a chair reading a Christmas list, is a framed painting of a walking Santa, a likeness that I remember seeing on ME cups, calendars, etc back in the 80s or 90s. This version is so detailed, whimsical, and colorful...typically Mary Englebreit.

Color and black & white illustrations depict Tasha Tudor's Vermont farmhouse. Mouse is asleep in bed, at home under the floorboards of the deserted living room. Illustrations are embellishments on most pages with twig frames and tiny animals or Christmas items in lower corners. Lots of owls in this version. One page has the sleigh approaching the chimney, and flying squirrels guiding Santa in with flares of some sort. Has three double page spreads with no text, just illustrations - one of Santa's sleigh flying over a field, another of a Christmas tree with toys, a third of Santa leaving as he flies over the house. Four Tasha Tudor illustrations of children playing as endpapers. This is one of my favorites.
