illustrated by Barbara Reid, who used Plasticine, paint, and other materials to make mice characters for the story. I LOVE these charming illustrations, and I think this version may be my new favorite.

The book has a section where it details how Coca-Cola Christmas ads with Sundblom's illustrations helped to form America's perception of what Santa Claus looked like. Before that, he was a mix of different cultures Father Christmases, etc, and had no distinct identifying characteristics.

The setting reminds me a little of my own house. It's a cape, with wide board floors, painted wall panels, a fireplace like mine, and lots of natural decorations (and 12 over 12 windows, which I have long wanted). The Santa is different-looking, like an old grandfather sort, and he comes down the chimney carrying a wand with a star. There's a toddler who awakens when the Father does (he's there on the cover), and he come downstairs and witnesses Santa working his magic.
